PPT is a part of the MS Office package. This tool allows users to present information via interactive multimedia slideshows and provides various options for customization. PPTX format is the new version of the extension.
The file was introduced back in 1987 and used to be a default extension for two decades. Open Office with its ODF increased competition on the market. As a result, in 2007 Microsoft Office came up with an MS Open XML file.
If to compare with the outdated one, the new format has a number of advantages. First of all, files (including formatted text, videos, images, graphics, music, and much more) are stored in a ZIP package and therefore are much smaller in size. Plus, the data in the new type is easier to recover and manage in general.
One more advantage is that file types in this format are more accessible. For instance, slide images are stored as separate image files while slide notes are presented as plain text notes.
The .pptx extension is compatible with PowerPoint 2007 or its later versions for Windows OS. In the case of using Mac OS X, the PowerPoint version should be 2008 or later.
